Some Advice on Baby Showers from a Veteran

One of my co-workers is giving a shower next week for one of the department supervisors having her first baby. The cute little pink and blue invitation arrived and I immediately wondered what to get this expectant bundle of joy… after all, I don’t even know this little person… and hardly know his or her mother. So, any gift ideas?

I went on an opinion hunt to discover what’s in for babies… I don’t know its size, its favorite color or even those baby hobbies or can’t miss tv shows. This baby is almost a perfect stranger. I say almost because I am forced to see the sonogram pictures, hear the stories of how the baby kicked so much the mother could not sleep, etc. What I also know is this: the baby enjoys lots of water since I see “Momma to Be” always drinking it and seeing her suffering the ramifications of such actions!

I got online (my shopping source of choice!) and decided to get a baby bank, a silver plated rattle and a small fork and spoon set. I also decided to have the bank engraved with Little Jayden’s (the name they chose for a boy or girl) College Fund. I figure even if the rattle or the fork and spoon hit the garage sale stack, the bank was sure to stick around… at least until college.

That’s pretty much all I had to share. Just one small event. Three nice gifts. Two annoying hours for the shower and five helpful hints: 1) Avoid expectant mothers 2) Avoid looking at expectant mother photos 3) Work in an office with lots of men 4) Mention loudly how you hate showers and 5) Shop online when none of the other four work!
